Why Do Home Appliance PCBs Have So Many Through-Hole Components?

Home appliance PCBs — refrigerators, washing machines, rice cookers — carry far more through-hole components than typical consumer electronics. The reasons:

1. Function diversity. Temperature control, timing, power protection and motor driving all require robust components (relays, transformers, large capacitors) that are mechanically stronger in through-hole form.

2. Component types decide the insertion method. Vertical components (capacitors, transformers) fit vertical insertion machines; horizontal components and wire jumpers run best on horizontal machines — Fulxing horizontal inserters also support jumper insertion; odd-form parts (switches, sensors) need odd-form inserters for precise placement.

3. Reliability requirements. Appliances must survive vibration, heat and years of daily use. Through-hole solder joints provide much stronger mechanical bonding than SMD-only assembly — one reason appliance boards keep this structure.
